ASBEC Submission: ACT Future Appliance Regulations to support the gas transition

16 September 2026

The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) welcomes the opportunity to respond to the ACT Government’s consultation to shape the next regulatory steps in its gas transition to support the safe, efficient and equitable decommissioning of the gas network – an important factor in achieving the ACT Government’s plan to electrify Canberra and achieve zero fossil fuel emissions by 2045.

Electrification of Australia’s built environment will not be achieved at speed and scale without government action. We commend the ACT Government on its ambition and leadership in developing viable pathways for transitioning to a net zero future, and the inclusive and collaborative consultation process being undertaken to ensure community support and engagement in realising that future.

We strongly agree with the guiding principles set out in the Integrated Energy Plan, which includes:

  • Setting a clear and implementable pathway
  • Enabling Canberrans to act
  •  Prioritising those most in need
  •  Ensuring secure and reliable energy systems
  • Removing barriers to the energy transition.
