The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC) welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the Climate Change Authority’s 2026 Annual Progress Advice. We agree with the Climate Change Authority (CCA) that meeting Australia’s emissions reduction targets requires faster, coordinated action across all sectors, with Australia needing to substantially increase its average annual abatement.
The built environment presents one of the most immediate and cost-effective opportunities for emissions reduction. It also delivers co-benefits in health, affordability and resilience. We recognise that the built environment also influences and enables emissions produced in other sectors, such as transport, electricity/energy and industry. The interdependencies between the built environment, energy system and transport sector will only increase as we try and create an energy system fit for the future.
